Ad Club Colorado is excited to announce the launch of a new initiative called Adcademy. A partnership with Boulder-based nonprofit Access Opportunity, Adcademy is a mentoring and shadowing program aimed at giving young, talented students an opportunity to experience business environments and learn about the advertising industry, in particular.

Starting this summer, more than 25 high school and college students from across the Metro Denver region will spend two days embedded in our Ad Club member agencies learning basic business skills and getting a firsthand look at what it’s like to work in the advertising field.

What do we need from you?

We’re calling on Ad Club CO member agencies to be part of Adcademy. Volunteer to host a student or students this summer. Give them a glimpse of what it’s like to work in advertising. Show them the dynamic office culture you've created in your agencies. Help them learn basic business skills like interviewing, brainstorming, presenting ideas. Introduce these remarkable but underserved kids to what we all know to be a pretty awesome way to make a living. We all remember that person, a mentor, who showed us the possibilities of working in the craft of advertising – let's pass that on to a new and diverse generation of students.

The students will be available to your team for a two-day workshop in June and/or July. So far, we have several agencies that have committed to this opportunity, including Karsh Hagan, Amelie, Barkley, Revel Interactive, The Moore Agency, Transamerica (in-house) and Philosophy Communication. We’d love to add you to the list.

To sign up for Adcademy, send your name, contact information and June/July availability to D’Arcy Toffolo at darcy.toffolo@gmail.com.

Why these students?

Access Opportunity is a nonprofit that facilitates opportunities for high-potential, low-income students. By gaining insights on and access to a variety of businesses and industries, it helps this next generation of Colorado talent consider careers in fields, like advertising, that they might not have considered before. By introducing them to new and different careers options, Access Opportunity is helping this important group of students from our community realize their unique interests and individual needs – and ultimately help fulfill their dreams of a meaningful career.

Why now?

We, like all of you, have been hearing for a number of years that the advertising industry has a diversity problem. It's too white. Too male. And that this lack of diversity has an impact on the work we produce. But rather than continue to talk about the problem, Ad Club Colorado wants to be part of the solution. That’s why we’re launching Adcademy – to both introduce a broader range of students to the unparalleled opportunities our industry offers and to foster more interest and excitement about advertising.

And more importantly, we want to help address the talent pipeline issues that will ultimately diversify our teams and our ideas – and allow us to more effectively reach all of the people we target with our work.
